How to Waste Less Food at Home (and Save Money)

About the products below: they are sold in the TopTierFind shop, so we earn money if you buy one. We have not tested them ourselves. Every product detail comes from the product listing; every piece of advice comes from the source linked next to it.
The short answer: plan your meals, buy only what you need, store food properly and use your freezer. The US EPA says one-third of all food in the United States goes uneaten, and the average family of four spends almost $3,000 a year on food that never gets eaten.
Plan before you shop
- Check your fridge, freezer and cupboards first, and plan meals around what needs using up (EPA).
- Write a list with quantities, for example “salad greens, enough for two lunches” (EPA).
- Bulk buying only saves money if you use it all before it spoils (EPA).
Store it so it lasts
- Keep the fridge at 40°F (4°C) or below, and the freezer at 0°F (−18°C) (FDA).
- Store raw meat, poultry and fish on the lower shelves, the coldest part. The door is the warmest part, so keep milk and eggs out of it (EPA).
- Wait to wash berries, cherries and grapes until you eat them, to prevent mould (EPA).
- Keep a “use soon” spot in the fridge for food that will go off in the next few days (FDA).
- Freeze bread, sliced fruit, meat or leftovers you won’t eat in time, and label them with the date (EPA).
Understand date labels
The FDA says confusion over date labels causes an estimated 20 percent of consumer food waste. “Best if used by” is about quality, not safety. Check the food for signs of spoiling instead of throwing it out on the date.
Food safety rule
Don’t leave perishable food at room temperature for more than two hours, or one hour above 90°F (32°C). Refrigerate leftovers within two hours (FDA).
